"The
Organs of Belarus. Polotsk St.Sophia Cath."
This
CD with the recordings of organ in Polotsk Sophia Cathedral is the
first one in the set of CDs called “The Organs of Belarus”. The aim
of the project is to record the historical and modern organs all over
Belarus. It will draw the attention to the problems of their restauration
and maintenance besides it will help regenerate the Belarusian organ
music of the previous centuries.
All the recordings reflect the accoustic features of the halls and
particular characteristics of the organs as much as it is possible.
The organ in the Concert Hall of St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk was
built in 1985 by Czsech firm Rieger Kloss (op. 3550). There 3 manuals
with mechanical action and a pedal, 47 stops with electric action
and about 3900 pipes in the organ.
The Concert Hall of Polotsk National historical and cultural museum-preserve
boasts of its unique organ and wonderful accoustics. It is considered
the best in the Republic of Belarus.
The first organ recital was performed by the People's Artist of Russia
Oleg Yanchenko on 2 May, 1985. Viviana Sofronitskaya was the first
full-time organist in Sophia Cathedral.
The current soloist of the Sophia Concert Hall Ksenija Pogorelaya
has been working there since 1988. She graduated from Moscow Conservatoire.
She was also a student of well-known organists in Hamburg and Amsterdam.
Ksenija Pogorelaya has had recitals in Russia, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland,
Austria, Poland and France.
Ksenija Pogorelaya is a laureate of the International festival “Mighty
God” (Mogiljev, 1993). She initiated the annual International festival
of organ music in Belarus “Sophia's Bells” in 1996. Ksenija Pogorelaya
also conducts Piano and Organ classes in the Belarusian State Academy
of Music.
